How are moles removed?

Dr Sewell removes normal moles for cosmetic reasons or if they are troublesome, as well as concerning, changing or cancerous moles. In all instances, she will initially assess the mole to make a diagnosis which will then determine the most appropriate method to remove the mole. Moles are usually removed via a shave excision for normal or troublesome moles and via an excision if it is a concerning, changing or cancerous mole.

Shave excision involves local anaesthetic injection, followed by the removal of the mole with a scalpel using a horizontal cut, then a solution or heat source is applied to stop any bleeding.

Excision involves local anaesthetic injection, followed by the removal of the mole by cutting out the mole as well as a margin of healthy skin around it with a scalpel, then stopping the bleeding with a heat source, then sutures and a dressing are applied.

In both instances, Dr Sewell will advise you on how to care for the area after your procedure.

All surgical procedures inevitably carry some degree of scarring, but Dr Sewell is a trained skin surgeon and uses techniques to minimise scarring when surgery is needed and often the scars are barely noticeable, particularly after a shave excision.
