What are skin biopsies?

Dr Sewell performs skin biopsies which are quick simple procedures carried out under local anaesthetic injection. After the injection, a very small area of affected skin is removed with a sharp device or a scalpel and sutures or a solution or heat source to stop the bleeding may or may not be applied. The removed affected skin (biopsy) is sent off to the lab to be stained and reviewed by a Pathologist. Skin biopsies are carried out to confirm the diagnosis of a rash or lesion if the rash or lesion is not typical or when it is not practical to remove the whole lesion and confirmation of the diagnosis is required before non-surgical treatment is started.
