What are Verrucae and Warts?
Warts are harmless, thickened, round, smooth areas on the skin that occur due to the Human Papilloma Virus. When they occur on the soles of the feet, they are also known as verrucae. They maybe painful if they occur on weight bearing areas eg. the balls of the feet. Warts and verrucae can be passed onto other people so avoid sharing towels, socks and shoes and do not go barefoot in public spaces. People with warts are usually self conscious and feel embarrassed. They are also usually very concerned about passing it onto other people, especially loved ones. The condition usually resolves spontaneously after 1-2years, but new warts can develop during this time and some can be more persistent. Some people choose not to have any treatment, but many are keen for treatment. Home wart paints and solutions are good initial treatments, but if they persist then other treatment modalities have a much higher rate of clearing them.
